Like a Sailboat on a Journey
By Susan Vaughan Shumake
*****
Like a sailboat on a journey
I have left the shore.
I am sailing on the sea.
I can see the land no more.
I have the stars at night
to chart my unknown way.
I have the sunshine bright
to warm me in the day.
My course is yet to see.
I am directed by the winds
and the current of the waters
as it swells and falls again.
At times the sea is peaceful
and rest comes easily.
At other times I’m threatened
by waves raging forcefully.
The rains come crashing down!
There seems to be no end!
And then the dawn awakens me,
a quiet, gentle friend.
The journey is a lifetime.
The Voyager is me.
I travel through my seasons
like a sailboat on the sea.
And though in open waters,
I will never be alone.
For the Captain of the Sea
will guide me safely home.
