Scars of Gold
Susan Vaughan Shumake
Inspired by a line in Jesus Calling: “Richly interwoven with golden strands of my intimate presence.”
*****
Looking in the mirror I see
Remnants of what used to be
Nothing as it was before
Body battered from the war
Warrior wounds to save my life
Created by a surgeon’s knife
Cut to kill the cancer’s course
Given all with great remorse
Though the outside marred it be
Inside there is purity
Trial of fire burns the old
Leaving only scars of gold
Shiny bright and brilliant seen
Golden strands God’s presence glean
Interwoven through my pain
God has given life again
Everything I owe to you
Broken pieces gold and glued
Healed and whole within my heart
Scars of Gold, God’s work of art
